ÐÔÊÓ½ç in Focus
February 2026
Dear ÐÔÊÓ½ç Community,
I am pleased to introduce "ÐÔÊÓ½ç in Focus: Reflections from the Office of the President," a message series designed to provide perspective on issues shaping our college and the communities we serve. Throughout the term, I will share insights on access, affordability and pathways to opportunity and student success across our region.
We begin with a topic central to many students and families: postsecondary affordability. For students planning to transfer to a four-year university, beginning at ÐÔÊÓ½ç College is one of the most strategic financial decisions they can make. Completing transferable general education coursework locally reduces tuition costs during the first two years while providing access to dedicated faculty, academic counseling and clearly mapped transfer pathways.
Affordability extends beyond tuition. Housing costs across our region present real challenges, and starting close to home allows students to reduce living expenses while building academic momentum.
Even before financial aid is factored in, the cost of a four-year university education varies widely. In-state tuition ranges from roughly $6,000 to $14,000 per year at California public universities. Out-of-state public tuition can approach $45,000 annually, while private universities like USC exceed $65,000, and Ivy League institutions surpass $85,000. These figures underscore the broad range of college costs and the opportunities presented by a post-secondary strategy that begins with ÐÔÊÓ½ç.
By comparison, ÐÔÊÓ½ç’s tuition for California residents is approximately $1,184 per year for a full-time course load, with additional costs for books and services. ÐÔÊÓ½ç students receive up to two years of free tuition through programs such as the California College Promise Grant for eligible low-income students, and additional grants and scholarships.
Through established transfer pathways and articulation agreements, ÐÔÊÓ½ç ensures students move efficiently toward bachelor’s degrees without losing time or credits. This work has earned national recognition. The Campaign for College Opportunity has named ÐÔÊÓ½ç a Pathway Champion of Transfer Equity for awarding a strong share of associate degrees for transfer and advancing equitable outcomes.
The long-term value of this approach is measurable. A College Futures Foundation analysis ranked ÐÔÊÓ½ç among the top institutions in the Inland Empire for return on investment, noting graduates typically recoup their net educational costs within about one year of completion. At ÐÔÊÓ½ç, affordability is about more than cost. It ensures every student, regardless of starting point, has a clear and supported pathway to a meaningful career and long-term economic stability.
Sincerely,
Henry D. Shannon, Ph.D.
Superintendent/President
